While I have never been fully and gainfully employed as a teacher, I did make go to Teacher’s College and I supply taught to suppliment my way through my under graduate degree. If you think teaching is a challenge; try supply teaching. I suspect that teachers must get tired of seeing the same old dribble come across there desks year after year. The same ideas repackaged so that it didn’t look like plagiarism.
As I read the latest articles and stories, I find that I want to preface my tweets constantly with “Duh” or “No kidding” or “Could have fooled me”. This is even more depressing, as I then succumb to the lowest form of wit possible: sarcasm. But honestly, I have seen this all before.
“What has been is what will be, and what has been done is what will be done; there is nothing new under the sun.” Eccl. 1:9
Sure there have been amazing inventions in the past few centuries. And yes, as I watch TED Talks I am constantly amazed. There are the occasional papers that I click through to that are way beyond my comprehension and clearly leading edge stuff. There are topics that I know very little about and so it does seem new to me. Maybe I’m getting old, but I don’t seem to be reading much that is novel, new or creative on most blogs, newsletters or web sites in my own related field. Now, don’t think that I am setting myself apart – I think that I am doing a lot of the regurgitation as well. Just because we can write blogs doesn’t mean we all should be. (That isn’t going to stop me, if I am on a roll!)
For example, let’s take a look at the on Smart Brief for Your Career yesterday:
- Dealing with an idea-stealer
- Recession sent many stay-at-home moms back to the workforce
- Part-time work may not lead to full-time jobs anymore
- Hate the context, not the co-worker
If you are as old as I am – that is if you remember the 60′s coherently – don’t these headings sound vaguely familiar. What goes around, comes around as my mother loved to say.
- “There is nothing new under the sun but there are lots of old things we don’t know.” Ambrose Bierce, The Devil’s Dictionary
Herein lies the interesting part. It IS new for lots of people. There are times when it is written in a way that is fit for the times and presented in a way that at that moment it makes sense or fits. Packaging. It is a lot about packaging. For the past 20 years I have been pretty much doing the same sorts of things – in different proportions and changing what I call myself. If this any different? I need to get over myself and realize that I have been around but there is still lots where I haven’t a clue. If I don’t get with it, I am not going to learn much more and that would not only be a waste. It would be irresponsible. That is today’s learning - stop thinking like a teacher and start being a student again. What have you learned today?
