Mergers and Acquisitions – Child’s Play (Alcatel-Lucent merger results disappoint)

Below is a fun and entertaining video that clearly explains the principles of synergy and innovation in relation to mergers and acquisitions. It was produced as a marketing tool (I suspect) for Acatel and Lucent after their merger in April of 2006. It ends saying that there is no equal. But has this synergy and creativity resulted in “No Equal” as they claim? Well last week the UK Register reported “Alcatel-Lucent said today it expects revenues for the fourth quarter of 2006, ended 31 December, to be about €3.87bn – essentially flat on last year.” What’s missing? Look at the 3.5 minute video and see if you can tell.

At the end the girl who started the comparison to M&A’s concludes that if the company could achieve all these market advantages then the possibilities are infinite . . . hence no equal. So what is missing? In our opinion, it is the Human Dimension of mergers and acquisitions that really creates the possibility of both synergy and the infinite.
