Sustainabilty and the Global Village

The McKinsey Review recently conducted as part of their strategy sections the following interview: Investing in sustainability: An interview with Al Gore and David Blood

What I found most interesting is how the article starts:

As McKinsey research indicates, executives around the world increasingly recognize that the creation of long-term shareholder value depends on a corporation’s ability to understand and respond to increasingly intense demands from society.1

1. The research, summarized in “The McKinsey Global Survey of Business Executives: Business and Society , January 2006” (The McKinsey Quarterly, Web exclusive, January 2006), indicates that 84 percent of executives think business has a broader contract with society.

We are truly as a fellow Canadian, Marshall McLuhan pointed out over 30 years ago – We are increasingly living in a global village.

Some of his other wonderful quotes that I particularly enjoy are:

  • “The new electronic independence re-creates the world in the image of a global village.”
  • “Tomorrow is our permanent address.”
  • “The past went that-a-way. When faced with a totally new situation, we tend always to attach ourselves to the objects, to the flavor of the most recent past. We look at the present through a rear view mirror. We march backwards into the future.”
  • “Technologies are not simply inventions which people employ but are the means by which people are re-invented.”
  • (But then he also wrote…) “Canada is the only country in the world that knows how to live without an identity

If you are interested in the topic of sustainability within the organizational context, you might also want to take a look at another interview that McKinsey conducted: One business’s commitment to society: An interview with the president of the Novartis Foundation for Sustainable Development
